Range Rover Evoque: First Drive Reviews

Last week we invited a handful of journalists to our vehicle proving ground in Gaydon to test drive the all new Range Rover Evoque. The prototypes made accessible to the testers included the coupé powered by the 236bhp 2.0 litre petrol turbo engine (which will also be available in automatic), and the five-door manual and automatic versions of the 2.2 litre 187bhp turbodiesel four cylinder.

See what the journalists had to say about their first experience driving the Range Rover Evoque:

Paul Horrell of Top Gear Magazine, said of the vehicle’s ride, “the ride has that lovely long-travel feel that makes the best SUVs so relaxing, but the brilliant thing is the way it’s combined with car-like control.”

Car Magazine’s, Phil McNamara commented on the Evoque’s body control, “All told, it’s a big tick for body control at pace: drive a little less ballistically and the Evoque negotiates ruts smoothly and quietly, though the ride remains on the firm rather than floaty side.”

The diesel and petrol models impressed What Car? during the test drives; “Both models had the optional adaptive dynamics variable suspension system, and with this in place, the Evoque feels more like a VW Golf GTI than a compact 4×4. It rides well, steers well, makes mincemeat of corners and keeps road- and wind noise to a minimum. “

As well as experiencing the drive of the vehicles, the journalists appraised the look and feel of the car’s interior: “As you settle into the driver’s seat, it quickly becomes obvious that the most impressive thing about the new Range Rover Evoque is the fact that it feels every bit as robustly built, luxurious and classy as a full sized Range Rover, “said Jack Rix (Auto Express).

Steve Cropley of AutoCar reviews the Evoque’s cabin as being “…plush. The emphasis is on leather, and plush-looking double stitching is prominent. The layout is most reminiscent of the Range Rover Sport, with a high console separating you from your passenger, creating a kind of driver’s cocoon”
